Due to a capacity increase of US American multinational Procter & Gamble’s West Thurrock, UK, production facility it commissioned UK lifting and plant handling solutions provider Radius Group to install two oversized vessels. Each vessel had a gross weight of 13te measuring in at 13.6m in length and with a transport diameter of 4.4m in diameter.
At the initial stages of the enquiry, Radius Group provided consultancy which outlined the methodology and proposed crane positions for the complex lifting operations. Early engagement with the clients’ project team and Original Equipment Manufacturer took place to advise on the lifting lug and transport positions, which enabled the successful tandem lifting operations on site.
Due to the vessels arriving from Poland, Radius provided off-site secure warehousing at its Northampton facility, to assist the client and manage the procurement process. Radius provided full CPA Contract Lift via 160te mobile crane to offload the oversized transport and hold the assets in secure storage.
Due to restricted access on site, and to minimise disruption to the client’s daily production requirements, Radius provided Swept Path Analysis and CAD detailing to outline the lifting operations from concept to completion. Radius also provided the enabling works via its in-house fleet of FORS Silver truck-mounted crane to relocate the site storage containers and prepare the work site to receive the mobile cranes. Radius’s contract managers provided the transport solution for the abnormal loads, to make the 2 ½ hour journey through different counties via public highways with police escorts and movement restrictions.
Once on site, full Chapter 8 traffic management and road closures were put in place for the offloading. Tandem lifting was executed for the ‘top & tailing’ and final positioning of the vessels to foundations. Radius also provided plant installation services for the assembly of the steel access ladders and platforms to the vessels, which allowed the client’s site team to commission the plant.
